Claude Skills Guide

The 5 skills to install
on day one

There are thousands of Claude skills. Most of them you don't need. These are the five I'd install if I was starting from scratch, each one with the exact steps and something to try in 30 seconds.

5 Skills
~3 min Total setup
Free All skills
0 Code to write

Skills are add-ons that teach Claude new abilities. Without skills, Claude is smart but generic. With the right skills installed, it produces real deliverables (documents, websites, graphics) that you can actually use in your business.

What you'll have after this guide
Professional documents
PDFs, Word docs, spreadsheets, slide decks on demand
Websites that look designed
Landing pages and portfolios with real design taste
Instant content breakdowns
Summarise any article, video, or URL in seconds
Visual graphics
Social posts, posters, one-pagers as PNG or PDF
Custom skills builder
Teach Claude to do tasks specific to your business
Self-sufficiency
Stop needing other people's skill lists after this
Before you start: You need Claude Code already installed and running. If you haven't set it up yet, do that first. It takes 5 minutes. This guide assumes you can open Claude Code by typing claude in your terminal.

How installing works: Open Claude Code in your terminal. Some skills live in the official marketplace (already available by default). Others live in Anthropic's skills marketplace. To access those, run this one-time setup first: /plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills. Then paste the install command for each skill below. Claude downloads the plugin and it's ready to use immediately, no restarts, no configuration.

1

Document Skills

Install this one first

This is the one that turns Claude Code from a chatbot into a business tool. It creates real files: PDFs, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint decks. Files you can email to a client, attach to a proposal, or share with your team.

Without this skill, Claude gives you text. With it, Claude gives you deliverables.

Step 1: Add the Anthropic skills marketplace (one-time)
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills
Step 2: Install Document Skills
/plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills
Note: The marketplace add step is one-time only. Once you've done it, you won't need to do it again for any of the other skills from this marketplace.

Try it right now:

Your first prompt
Create a PDF proposal for a consulting engagement. Include a cover page, scope of work with 3 deliverables, a 4-week timeline, and pricing at $3,000/month.
What happens: Claude builds a formatted PDF on your computer. Open it, swap in your real details, and you've got a client-ready proposal in under 60 seconds.
2

Frontend Design

This is why most AI-built websites look like AI-built websites. Without this skill, Claude reaches for the same defaults every time. With it, Claude has actual design taste. The skill names the three looks AI design always falls back on and tells Claude not to use them, then makes it plan the palette and typography before writing any code.

If you ever want Claude to build you a landing page, a portfolio, or anything someone else will see, install this first.

No extra setup needed: this one is in the official marketplace, which is already available by default.
Install: paste this in Claude Code
/plugin install frontend-design@claude-plugins-official

Try it right now:

Your first prompt
Build me a landing page for my consulting business. Modern and minimal. Hero section with a clear headline, 3 benefit cards, a testimonial section, and an email signup form. Open it in my browser when you're done.
What happens: Claude builds the page and opens it in your browser. You'll see an actual website, not a sketch, not a mockup. A real page you could deploy today.
3

Summarize

Drop in any URL, article, or YouTube video link. Claude gives you a clean, structured breakdown: key points, takeaways, the important parts pulled out so you don't have to read or watch the whole thing.

Straight up: the other four here are Anthropic's. This one is mine. I wrote it because I wanted a summary that gives a verdict instead of a neutral recap. It's open source, and the install is one command.

Install: paste this in your terminal
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/daniel9834/claude-skills/main/install.sh | bash -s summarize

Articles, PDFs and pasted text work straight away. For video links you also need yt-dlp, one command: brew install yt-dlp. Without it, videos fail with a message telling you why rather than guessing at the content.

Try it right now: Grab any article or YouTube video URL you've been meaning to read or watch. Paste it into Claude Code with the word "summarise", or just "tldr?" if you want the short version.

What happens: You get the argument, the details worth keeping, what the source gets wrong, and a straight verdict on whether the original is worth your time. Say "tldr?" and it stays under 130 words; ask it to go deep and it expands. For videos it pulls the transcript itself, so it's working from what was actually said.
The part I care about most: if it can't actually read something (paywall, dead link, a video with no captions), it tells you and stops, instead of quietly inventing a summary from the headline. A made-up summary looks exactly like a real one until you act on it.
4

Canvas Design

Need a social media graphic? A poster for an event? A professional-looking one-pager for a client? Describe what you want and Claude builds it as a PNG or PDF, ready to download and post.

This one replaced Canva for me. Not for everything, but for "I need a quick visual and I don't want to open another app," it's faster.

Same marketplace as Document Skills. If you already ran the marketplace add step earlier, you're good. Just install.
Install: paste this in Claude Code
/plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills
Heads up: this bundle is bigger than it looks. It installs twelve skills, including Canvas Design, Algorithmic Art and Web Artifacts Builder. Two of them are Frontend Design and Skill Creator, which you installed separately in steps 2 and 5. Installing both ways is harmless, but if you'd rather keep things tidy, run this bundle first and skip those two individual installs.

Try it right now:

Your first prompt
Create an Instagram post graphic. Bold stat: "Most AI advice is written by people who have never run a business." Dark background, clean modern typography, my handle @askdandonovan at the bottom. Export as PNG.
What happens: Claude builds the graphic and saves it to your computer. Open the file, and it's ready to post. No Canva login, no template browsing, no dragging elements around.
5

Skill Creator

This is the most important skill on this list. Not because of what it does today, but because of what it unlocks tomorrow. Skill Creator teaches Claude how to build skills for your specific business.

It interviews you about what you need. It builds the skill. It tests it. And now you have a custom tool that nobody else has, one that does exactly what your business requires.

Once you have this, you stop needing someone else's list of skills. You make your own.

Official marketplace: no extra setup needed, same as Frontend Design.
Install: paste this in Claude Code
/plugin install skill-creator@claude-plugins-official

Try it right now:

Your first prompt
/skill-creator
What happens: Claude starts asking you questions: what does your business do, what tasks eat your time, what would you automate if you could. Then it builds a custom skill and tests it. The whole process takes about 5 minutes.

Quick wins to try right now

Skills are installed. Now do something with them. Each of these takes under 60 seconds and produces something you can actually use.

Document Skills
Generate a client invoice

Produces a real PDF you can email in 30 seconds.

Prompt
Create a PDF invoice. My company: [Your Name]. Client: [Client Name]. Service: consulting — August 2026. Amount: $2,500. Payment due in 14 days. Include my email for payment questions.
Frontend Design
Build a pricing page

A real, deployable page, not a wireframe.

Prompt
Build a pricing page with 3 tiers: Starter ($29/mo), Pro ($79/mo), and Enterprise (custom). Each tier has 5 features. The Pro tier should be highlighted as most popular. Clean, modern design. Open it in my browser.
Canvas Design
Make a LinkedIn carousel cover

A scroll-stopping graphic, not a Canva template.

Prompt
Create a LinkedIn post image. Title: "5 AI Tools That Actually Save Time" — bold white text on a dark gradient background. Subtitle: "Tested by a business owner, not a tech influencer." Clean, professional. Export as PNG.
Skill Creator
Build your first custom skill

Takes 5 minutes. Claude interviews you and builds it.

Prompt
/skill-creator
Tip: The more specific you are, the better the output. "Build me a landing page" is fine. "Build me a landing page for my dog grooming business in Austin, with a booking form and before/after photos" is much better.
What non-technical people are building

Client proposals sent same-day. Pricing pages deployed before lunch. Weekly reports generated in 30 seconds instead of 2 hours. Custom skills that handle the tasks they used to do manually every single week. None of them write code. They just describe what they need.

Before you start: You need a Claude account at claude.ai (or the Claude desktop app). Free, Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise all work. You'll also need to enable one setting before skills work.

How installing works: In the Claude browser or desktop app, go to Customize in the sidebar, then Create new skills. Click the + button to open the Directory. It has three tabs: Skills, Connectors, and Plugins. Search for each skill by name, click the + on the card to add it. No commands to type. Everything is click-based.

One-time setup (do this first)
1. Go to Settings (gear icon)
2. Click Capabilities
3. Toggle on Code execution and file creation
Why this matters: Skills need code execution to create files like PDFs, spreadsheets, and graphics. Without this toggle, Claude can describe what it would make, but can't actually make it.
1

Document Skills

Nothing to install

This is the one that turns Claude from a chatbot into a business tool. It creates real files: PDFs, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint decks. Files you can download, email to a client, or share with your team.

Good news: this one is already done for you. Anthropic made the PDF, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills built-in to Claude.ai. You don't need to upload anything. If you've already completed the one-time setup above (toggling on Code execution and file creation), you're ready to go.

Try it right now:

Your first prompt: paste this into Claude
Create a PDF proposal for a consulting engagement. Include a cover page, scope of work with 3 deliverables, a 4-week timeline, and pricing at $3,000/month.
What happens: Claude generates the PDF right in the chat. You'll see a download link. Click it, and you've got a client-ready proposal in under 60 seconds.

Check the Directory first. Open Customize → Skills → + and search "frontend". If Frontend Design is listed, add it there and skip the download below. One click, done. Anthropic keeps adding skills to the Directory, so this one may already be waiting for you. If it isn't listed, use the file below instead.
Upload it
1. Click Customize in the sidebar
2. Click Create new skills
3. Click the + button (top right), then Upload skill
4. Drag and drop (or click to select) the frontend-design.zip file

Try it right now:

Your first prompt: paste this into Claude
Build me a landing page for my consulting business. Modern and minimal. Hero section with a clear headline, 3 benefit cards, a testimonial section, and an email signup form.
What happens: Claude generates a complete HTML page as a downloadable file. Open it in your browser and you'll see an actual website, not a sketch, not a mockup.
3

Summarize

Paste any article text, document, or content into Claude. It gives you a clean, structured breakdown: key points, takeaways, the important parts pulled out so you don't have to read the whole thing.

Nothing to install here. In the browser and desktop app, Claude summarises natively. There's no skill to add. Just paste your content, or upload the file, and ask. (In Claude Code it's a separate skill, which is the tab next door.)

Try it right now: Copy-paste any article you've been meaning to read, or upload a PDF, and add this prompt:

Your first prompt: paste this into Claude
Summarize this in a structured breakdown: key points, main arguments, and actionable takeaways.
What happens: In about 10 seconds, you get a structured summary. Works on articles, PDFs, documents, reports, anything you can paste or upload.
4
