Setup Guide

Never hit your Claude Code
limit by surprise again

One command gives you real-time token usage, block timer, and context percentage, right in your Claude Code terminal. Here's how to set it up.

ccstatusline is a free, open-source status line formatter that shows live metrics (tokens used, time remaining, context percentage) directly in your Claude Code terminal. It's like a dashboard for your AI coding session.

What you'll have after this
Block timer
See hours left in your usage window
Token counter
Track input/output tokens in real time
Context percentage
Know when to start a new session
Model indicator
Always know which model you're running
Before you start: If Claude Code is already running on your machine, you have everything you need. Just paste the command in Step 1.
1

Run the setup command

Open your terminal and paste this. It downloads and launches the configuration tool, no global install needed.

Terminal
npx -y ccstatusline@latest

You'll see an interactive menu open right in your terminal. That's the configuration tool.

2

Use the setup I recommend

The menu shows you everything you can display in your status line. There are a lot of options. Don't worry about most of them. Here's what I use:

  • Block timer: hours left in your usage window
  • Token usage: how many tokens you've burned this session
  • Context bar: how full Claude's memory is (this is the big one)
  • Model name: which model is active right now

Add those four using the menu, skip everything else for now. You can always rerun the command later to change things.

3

Hit Install and open a new session

Click Install in the menu. It writes to your Claude Code settings automatically, no config files to edit by hand.

Open a new Claude Code session and your status line is live. That's it.

Your settings save to ~/.config/ccstatusline/settings.json. They persist across sessions and updates.

What to try first

Watch your context climb
Start a build and keep an eye on the context percentage. When it gets above 70%, that's your cue to wrap up and start a fresh session, before Claude starts forgetting what you told it.
Plan around your block timer
If you've got 2 hours left in a 5-hour block, you'll know to tackle the big task now instead of burning time on small stuff and running out mid-build.
Notice when Claude slows down
When your context percentage is high, Claude starts working harder and responding slower. Once you can see it, you'll know exactly when to start fresh instead of fighting a sluggish session.

You wouldn't drive a car without a fuel gauge. Why would you code with an AI that doesn't tell you when it's running out? Now you've got one. Safe to install, won't touch your projects, and one command to remove if you change your mind.
